The introduction to the SRA’s Handbook states that:

‘Firms will need to ensure that all employees (even if non-qualified and non-fee earners) receive appropriate training on the requirements in the Handbook, but only to the extent necessary for the role they undertake in the firm. For example, all staff will need to understand that they should keep clients’ affairs confidential and behave with integrity; however it is likely that only those in fee-earning roles need be aware of the procedures required for checking for conflicts of interests and giving undertakings.’

Management Skills Programme for Barristers’ Clerks

UMD Professional and Warner Consulting run the ILM Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management course for Barristers’ Clerks.  The course has been specially designed for Clerks and is a two year programme held in London, involving monthly evening workshops and webinars to fit in with the demands of the working life of Clerks.

In addition, Clerks and Practice Managers who complete the ILM level 5 Diploma can build on their qualification with further part time study to achieve a degree.

Peter Warner said, ‘Since the introduction of the Diploma programme in 2012 more than 30 clerks have undertaken the course.  They have all shown high levels of commitment and enthusiasm in completing the workshops and written assignments.  One of the outstanding features has been the ways in which the topics covered have been applicable to the day to day management of chambers.’

The course is open to all Senior Clerks and Practice Managers but IBC members benefit from a discount on the fees.  Fees can be paid in instalments but there is a further discount for payment in full at the start of the course.
